Amtrak's 2 Millionth Passenger…
The 2 millionth passenger on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, Robert Roy, Jr. greeted officials in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara on September 30, 2003, as he traveled north on the train. A former Navy SEAL, and current Navy recruiter, Roy is based in San Diego, and travels 2-3 times a week on the Pacific Surfliner. He noted, "I really appreciate the no-stress environment."
Barbara Richardson, Amtrak's Vice President of Marketing and Sales, said, "The positive response from our passengers regarding the Pacific Surfliner has been overwhelming." Amtrak reported that the Pacific Surfliner ridership was up more than 25 percent in fiscal year 2003 over the previous year, reaching the first-ever milestone of 2 million passengers in a year.
In
Los Angeles, speakers emphasized that the Pacific Surfliner corridor is
the second busiest corridor for Amtrak in the U.S. At the Union Station
event, Roy was awarded a prize of a weekend in Santa Barbara at the Inn
of the Spanish Garden, a Santa Barbara Car Free project partner.

Speakers
at the Santa Barbara event, which was coordinated by Amtrak and the
Santa Barbara County Association of Governments, celebrated the
milestone. Said Doug Allard, Air Pollution Control Officer with the
Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (the lead for
the Santa Barbara Car Free project): "Every passenger that gets off
this train represents a victory for clean air."
