How to Take a Bike on Local Transit Services

With a bike and local transit services you can get just about anywhere in Santa Barbara and the surrounding areas!

Here is a how to guide when it comes to transporting your bike on local transit. Please be aware that for some services you are required to book ahead of time.

Bikes on Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (MTD)

The Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) services Santa Barbara, Goleta, Montecito, Summerland, and Carpinteria. The Transit Fare is $ 1.75 and there is no fee for bikes! Each bus can store 2 bikes on a front rack (except for their electric shuttles). For more information please see Bringing Your Bike on the MTD website.  

Bikes on the Clean Air Express

The Clean Air Express services Lompoc, Solvang, Buellton, Los Olivos, Santa Maria, Goleta, & Santa Barbara. There is both weekday commuter service and Saturday service. The Transit Fare is $ 7.00 and there is no fee for bikes! Six bikes can fit in storage bays underneath and some buses have 2 front bike racks. Bikes on the Coast Starlight

The Coast Starlight (Amtrak) services between Los Angeles and Seattle. The Transit Fare is $33 – $145 and there is a $10 baggage fee for bikes and a $15 fee for a bicycle box. Check your bike in at the station at least an hour before departure. Bikes must be boxed and checked. For more information please see Bring Your Bicycle Onboard on the Amtrak website.

Bikes on the Coastal Express

The Coastal Express services Ventura, Oxnard, Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta & UCSB. The Transit Fare is $ 3.00 and there is no fee for bikes! Each bus has 7 bike slots in the storage bays underneath. For more information please see the Coastal Express website.

Bikes on the Pacific Surfliner

The Pacific Surfliner (LOSSAN) services between San Diego and San Luis Obispo. The Transit Fare is $20 – $42 and there is no fee for bikes! Each train has 6 spaces for bikes in the cabin.
