Santa Barbara Car Free’s New Home

Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (APCD) is pleased to announce that its Santa Barbara Car Free program has found a new home: Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) / Traffic Solutions will be taking over the program.

APCD founded this program more than 20 years ago, encouraging car-free travel to and from the area to help reduce pollution from passenger cars. Participants in the program have earned hotel and activity perks for taking the train instead of driving — made possible by the early and lasting support of many travel and hospitality businesses and organizations. The program has received several awards, including a National Clean Air Excellence Award from the U.S. EPA.

SBCAG/Traffic Solutions was an early partner and champion of the program, and the program’s goals align with those of Traffic Solutions. With the current reality of COVID19 and the changing landscape of protocols and restrictions, the program may look a little different moving forward but will keep its original intent: promoting alternative transportation options in the area for residents and visitors alike. For now, the program is essentially “parked” as we assess how to move forward, but certain benefits are still available – such as the 20% discount on certain Amtrak train services.
